MLB:  

  • Cy Young Award:  Clayton Kershaw of the LA Dodgers and Corey Kluber of the Cleveland Indians won the Cy Award today.  Kershaw represented for the National League and Kluber for the American League.  This award is given each year to the best MLB pitcher, one for each league.  This is Kershaw’s 2nd Cy Young Award in 2 years, 3rd award in 4 years and for Kluber the award was more of a suprise rewarding a turnaround performance toward the end of the season.  Read more:  Cy Young Award
  • St. Louis Cardinal outfielder death, Oscar Traveras:  Oscar Traveras, outfielder for the St. Louis Cardinals, died on October 26th with his 18-year-old girlfriend, Edilia Arvelo, in a car crash his home country, the Dominican Republic.  Today officials in the Dominican Republic released the findings of toxicology tests which showed that Taveras’ blood-alcohol level measured 5X the legal limit.  The St. Louis Cardinals have not yet reviewed the report.  Read more:  Oscar Traveras

Market Update:  Markets close flat to lower today

U.S. stocks ended Wednesday’s choppy session essentially flat

  • Dow:  17,612.20  -0.02%
  • S&P 500:  2,038.22  -0.07%  –>  utilities & energy sector sell off
  • Nasdaq:  4,675.13  +0.31%  –>  closed higher

What caused markets to close flat/lower today and slow down the 5 day S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average streak of closing higher each day?

  • Falling oil prices – making investors nervous as oil prices are at their lowest levels in 3 years.   This is affecting the cost of gasoline which is at a national average of $2.92/gallon – $.29 lower than it was 3 months ago.  Oil lowest in 3 years
  • Geopolitical risks specifically surrounding Russia’s continued invasion into Ukraine.  Russian troops, tanks and heavy artillery have moved into eastern Ukraine this week while Russia continues to deny its involvement in Ukraine.  Read more:  Russia still invading Ukraine

Stocks to note:

  • J.M. Smucker Co. (SJM):  Smuckers dropped almost 4% today due to lower outlooks for the year on sales as Smuckers blamed most of the decline in sales on its coffee brand Folgers, which took prices up due to higher commodity costs.  Smuckers was the worst performer in the S&P 500 today.  Smuckers
  • J.C. Penney Co. JCP:  JC Penny reported earnings on Tuesday and the stock ended the day up almost 8%.  While 3rd quarter earnings missed expectations, the loss was smaller than expected.  JC Penny
  • Macy’s:  Macy’s cut its sales forecast and reported disappointing 3rd Quarter sales.  Sales were $6.2B vs. $6.3B last year (Q3).  Macy’s profit +23% due to asset sales.  Read more:  Macys

What are we looking forward to?   The government’s monthly report on retail sales is due on Friday; investors are expecting sales to +.2% in October.  Other retailer earnings which will be reported: Kohl’s, Nordstrom & Walmart.

Wall Street Journal:  Ukrainian volunteer fighters Wednesday in the village of Pisky, near the rebel-held city of Donetsk in eastern Ukraine.
